Representation Learning
Definition
Representation learning means the model learns how to transform input into useful internal representations.
Instead of only using hand-chosen features, the network learns intermediate values during training.
Basic pattern:
input -> learned representation -> output
Representation learning is learning useful internal forms of the data.
What Is A Representation
A representation is a form of information used by the model.
Example:
raw input values
hidden layer values
final output scores
The hidden layer values are not the final answer.
They are internal forms that help produce the answer.
A representation is information in a form the model can use.
Why Learning Representations Matters
Some problems are hard in the original input form.
A learned representation can make the structure easier to separate, compare, or predict.
Example:
raw input -> hard pattern
transformed representation -> easier pattern
This connects back to the XOR idea: representation can change what a simple decision rule can do.
Learning can mean learning a better internal form, not only learning a final rule.
Representations Are Learned Through Loss
The model is not directly told what every hidden representation should be.
Training adjusts parameters to reduce loss.
As parameters change, the internal representations change too.
parameters -> hidden representations -> output -> loss
Internal representations are shaped by the training objective.
Final Summary
- Representation learning means learning useful internal forms of data.
- Hidden layer values are representations.
- A better representation can make a task easier.
- Representations are learned through parameter updates.
- The loss function shapes what representations become useful.
- Deep networks learn by transforming representations across layers.
