Graphs and Computation

Bridge to Numbers and Algebra

Graphs describe structure; numbers and algebra let us measure, compare, and transform that structure.

Bridge To Numbers And Algebra

What This Chapter Built

This chapter introduced graphs as structure.

Graphs gave us:

  • nodes
  • edges
  • direction
  • weights
  • paths
  • cycles
  • trees
  • dependency graphs
  • computation graphs

Graphs show how things are connected.

What Graphs Explain Well

Graphs are good at representing structure.

They answer questions like:

  • what is connected?
  • what depends on what?
  • can one node reach another?
  • does the structure contain a cycle?
  • where does data flow?

These are structural questions.

Graphs make connection and dependency visible.

Why Numbers Come Next

Many graph questions need measurement.

Examples:

How many nodes are there?
How many edges are there?
How long is this path?
What is the weight of this edge?
Which route has lower cost?

To answer these, we need numbers.

Numbers let us count, measure, and compare graph structure.

Why Algebra Comes Next

Algebra lets us describe rules for transforming values.

Example:

new value = old value + 1

or:

total cost = edge1 + edge2 + edge3

Graph structure tells us what is connected.

Algebra lets us compute with the values attached to that structure.

Algebra gives rules for manipulating quantities.

From Structure To Calculation

Graphs and algebra work together.

Example:

A --2-- B --4-- C

The graph shows the route:

A to B to C

The numbers let us calculate the total:

2 + 4 = 6

Structure tells us what to combine; numbers and algebra tell us how to combine it.

Bridge Summary

  • Graphs represent connection and dependency.
  • Numbers let us count and measure.
  • Algebra lets us express transformation rules.
  • Weighted graphs already show why numerical values matter.
  • Computation graphs already show why algebraic rules matter.
  • The next chapter builds the numerical and algebraic foundation needed for later topics.
