Bridge To Optimization
Where We Are
This chapter connected probability to loss through information theory.
The progression was:
information -> surprise -> entropy -> cross-entropy -> loss
The main idea:
bad probability assignment creates measurable mismatch
Information theory turns uncertainty mismatch into quantities learning can minimize.
What Information Theory Added
Information theory gave us ways to measure:
surprise of one outcome
uncertainty of a distribution
mismatch between distributions
probability quality of predictions
This matters because learning needs more than a prediction.
It needs a way to say how wrong the prediction was.
Information theory gives probability-based wrongness a measurement.
Loss Creates An Objective
A loss function gives the model something to reduce.
Example:
high probability on true outcome -> low loss
low probability on true outcome -> high loss
This turns prediction quality into a numeric objective.
Loss defines what improvement means.
Why Optimization Comes Next
Once we have a loss, the next question is:
How do we change parameters to reduce it?
That is an optimization problem.
The model has parameters.
The loss depends on those parameters.
Training searches for parameter values that produce lower loss.
Optimization is the process of reducing the objective.
Connection Back To Calculus
Calculus gave us gradients.
Information theory gave us loss.
Together:
loss tells what to reduce
gradient tells how loss changes
optimization chooses parameter updates
This creates the learning loop.
Gradients make loss reducible through parameter movement.
From Loss To Landscape
For each parameter setting, the model has some loss.
This creates a loss landscape:
parameter setting -> loss value
Optimization moves through this landscape looking for lower values.
A loss function creates the surface that optimization searches.
Bridge Question
The next chapter begins with:
How do we minimize a loss function?
That leads to:
objective function
parameter
parameter space
loss landscape
gradient descent
learning rate
convergence
regularization
generalization
Optimization turns measured error into parameter updates.
