Bridge To Neural Networks
Where We Are
This chapter explained optimization as parameter search.
The progression was:
objective function -> loss -> parameters -> parameter space -> loss landscape
Then optimization used gradients:
gradient descent -> learning rate -> step size -> convergence
And finally we connected optimization to learning quality:
overfitting -> underfitting -> regularization -> generalization
Optimization turns measured error into parameter updates.
What Optimization Added
Information theory gave us ways to measure mismatch.
Optimization tells us how to reduce that mismatch.
loss tells what is wrong
gradient tells how loss changes
optimizer changes parameters
This creates the core learning pattern.
Learning requires both measurement and adjustment.
Why Neural Networks Come Next
A neural network is a parameterized function.
That means:
input -> network with parameters -> output
The network has adjustable values inside it.
Training changes those values to reduce loss.
Neural networks are learned by optimizing their parameters.
The Training Loop Ahead
The next chapter will make this structure concrete.
The basic loop is:
1. send input through the network
2. compute output
3. measure loss
4. compute how parameters affected loss
5. update parameters
6. repeat
This is the same optimization structure from this chapter, applied to a specific kind of model.
Neural network training is repeated parameter adjustment guided by loss.
What Changes in the Next Chapter
So far, we treated the model mostly as an abstract parameterized system.
Next, the question becomes:
what is the structure of the system whose parameters are being optimized?
That leads to:
neuron
weighted sum
bias
activation function
layer
forward pass
loss computation
The next chapter explains the model structure that optimization trains.
Final Summary
- Optimization searches parameter space for lower objective values.
- Loss measures what optimization should reduce.
- Gradients describe local change in loss.
- Gradient descent updates parameters using that local change.
- Regularization and generalization connect optimization to useful behavior.
- Neural networks are parameterized systems trained by this optimization loop.
